Speaker or Microphone, which came first?

You need a speaker to hear sounds picked up by a microphone. And you need a microphone to pick up sounds to be heard on a speaker. So, have you ever thought of which of two was actually invented first? Was the microphone invented first? If so, how did the inventor reproduced those sounds picked up by the microphone without a speaker? If it was the speaker first, from where did the inventor get the sounds to listen to on the speaker? Some of you may say that they were invented at the same, but is it so? A little research may bring up some facts that may surprise you.
